Gursewak Singh, sepoy killed in Pakistani firing, cremated with honours

CHANDIGARH: Gursewak Singh, the soldier who was killed in Pakistani firing across the Line of Control [LoC] in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district of Kashmir, was cremated with full military honours at his village of Warana in Taran Tarn district of Punjab today.

A large crowd gathered to witness the last rites. The soldier's family was inconsolable. His two sisters cried during the last rites, while his mother seemed to be in shock. His father Balwinder Singh put up a brave front, and said, "We are proud of our son’s sacrifice in the line of duty.”

Gursewak, 24, joined the 22 Sikh Regiment in 2013 and was to marry a girl from Nagoke village next February. The last time he was home, he had booked a marriage hall for the ceremony and bought his wedding suit.

Gursewak's elder brother Jasbir teared up as he said, "My brother made all the arrangements for his wedding and the whole family was so happy."

Until Gursewak joined the Army, the family used to struggle. Jasbir is a daily-wager and father Balwinder Singh owns half an acre of land.
